With over thirty years of experience in the field of dance, Michael Medcalf continues to engage with inspiring educational and artistic opportunities that will expand his range as an educator, choreographer, performing artist, and arts administrator.

Mr. Medcalf received a Master of Fine Arts degree in dance from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa in 2013.  Currently, Mr. Medcalf serves as an Assistant Professor of Dance and the Director of Alabama State University’s BFA/Dance Program, a program within the Department of Theatre Arts. In 2016, Mr. Medcalf received Alabama State Council on the Arts’ Fellowship in Dance and was selected for leadership mentoring as apart of Dance/USA’s Dance Institute for Leaders Training.  Medcalf serves as a board member of both the Alabama Dance Council and Cleveland Dance Movement.

As an educator, Mr. Medcalf has served as a faculty member at select institutions of higher learning and private studios across the country in the capacities of director, assistant professor, and instructor. Both in academia and the private sector, Mr. Medcalf has proven success as an arts administrator in the areas of management, fundraising, strategic planning, curriculum and program development, and its implementation.

As a professional dancer, Mr. Medcalf has been a member and guest artist with  numerous professional companies; Alfred Gallman’s Newark Dance Theatre (Newark), Ballethnic Dance Company (Atlanta), Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble (Denver), Dancing Wheels (Cleveland), David Taylor Dance Theatre (Denver), Groundworks Dance Theatre (Cleveland), Kim Robards Dance (Denver), Lula Elzy Dance Theatre (New Orleans), Several Dancers Core (Atlanta), Ohio Dance Theatre (Oberlin), and Verb Ballets (Cleveland).  His own endeavors as founder/artistic director include the Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theatre (Cleveland) and the Greene/Medcalf Movement Project (Cleveland).  Currently, Mr. Medcalf develops solo and duet projects for the stage and camera for Michael Medcalf/Inventions (Montgomery).

Mr. Medcalf has worked with and performed the choreography of prominent choreographers such as Gary Abbott, Talley Beatty, Duane Cyrus, Ronald K. Brown, Katherine Dunham, Alfred Gallman, Marisa Glorioso, Lula Elzy, Kevin (Iega) Jeff, Bill T. Jones, Waverly Lucas, Paloma McGregor, Dianne McIntyre, Donald McKayle, Jennifer Muller, Eleo Pomare, Dwight Rhoden, Kim Robards, Cleo Parker Robinson, David Rousseve, David Taylor, Shapiro and Smith, David Shimotakahara and others on concert stages throughout North America, Turkey, Greece, Africa, Bulgaria, Germany, and Cyprus.

As a choreographer Mr. Medcalf has been commissioned to choreograph for opera, musical theater, and the concert stage for numerous arts organizations and institutions of higher learning throughout North America.
